Toxicology Doctoral Student Wins Burdock Award from Food Safety Section of National Society of Toxicology

Suresh Nagumalli, a doctoral candidate for the Pharmacy Ph.D, Toxicology Track, was awarded the prestigious Burdock travel award by the Food Science Specialty Section of the Society of Toxicology (SOT) at the 2017 meeting in Baltimore. 

Suresh received the award for his poster presenting his research “Variation in Myelostimulatory and Toxicological Activity of Different Medicinal Species of Echinacea Upon 7-Day Oral Treatment in Sprague-Dawley Rats”. 

This work was funded, in part, and done in collaboration with researchers from the US Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service, who provided plants of several Echinacea species used in dietary supplements because of their ability to modulate the immune system.  The findings are significant because they identify source-material optimal for beneficial pharmacological effect in parallel with screening for minimal toxicity.

The Burdock award is presented to the best research presented by an exemplary graduate student at the annual SOT meeting that addresses the safety of food ingredients and dietary supplements.  The award was founded by George A. Burdock, Ph.D., president of the safety and regulatory consulting firm of the Burdock Group.  Dr. Burdock is a highly respected toxicologist.  One of his noteworthy contributions is the chapter “Food Toxicology” in Casarett and Doull’s
